10 Alkaline Foods to Combat Belly Fat

by: Cassandra Stirling

  1. Green tea contains catechin polyphenols (in particular epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)) which is a powerful natural fat burner meaning it increases levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis.  The naturally occurring caffeine in green tea intensifies this effect.  EGCH has also been shown to inhibit the movement of blood glucose into fat cells.  If you don’t like drinking green tea, try taking supplement form of green tea extract.

  2. Cinnamon.  Studies have shown that cinnamon contains a type of antioxidant that increases insulin sensitivity.  People who are insulin resistant cannot effectively get sugar out of the blood and into the cells; therefore they store the excess glucose as white fat around the mid region.  Cinnamon helps make the receptors more sensitive to insulin so they are more inclined to enter the cells and not get stored as belly fat.

  3. Blueberries.  Not only are these berries loaded with antioxidants and fiber but also they also increase insulin sensitivity and ultimately help to balance blood sugar levels.  When your blood sugar levels are stabilized, your body is less inclined to store belly fat.

  4. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids, which help stimulate your body’s metabolism, promoting weight loss.   Try replacing some other oils around your house (like vegetable oil) for raw, expeller pressed coconut oil.  LCFA acids mostly get stored as fat while MCFA get used as energy.  Use it for cooking, or simply eat a spoonful raw.  Studies have also shown that coconut oil increases thyroid activity and since adrenal fatigue or burnout contributes to belly fat, using coconut oil could help correct a large part of the adrenal problem.

  5. Chia seeds.  These powerful seeds are an amazing source of protein, omega 3 fatty acids and important minerals.  Most people get way too much omega 6 fatty acid compared to omega 3 fatty acids in their diets and this is not a good thing.  Chia seeds give a nice dose or omega 3’s without the excessive less desired omega 6’s.  Omegas 3 fatty acids have been shown to improve blood sugar levels, lower insulin levels, block fat storage, increase metabolic rate and suppress the production of cortisol (released during stress).  Chia seeds can be added to smoothies or sprinkled on yogurt, granola or even a salad.

  6. Leafy Greens.  These alkaline staples are jam packed with nutrients and antioxidants.  They are also filled with chlorophyll and tons of vitamins and minerals and they are very low in calories.  Most people who are overweight are acidic. This happens because when buffer reserves are depleted, the body begin storing acids in tissues and fat cells. The strong alkaline nature of dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, collards and dandelion greens help to keep your body out of the acidic state by producing a very alkaline ash and providing alkaline minerals to help buffer excess acids in the body.  You can also try using a green powder to get a similar effect.

  7. Avocados are filled with monounsaturated fats that studies have been shown to reduce belly fat and speed up metabolism.  They are also packed with fiber, which aids in weight loss and they contain valuable vitamins and minerals.  Try using avocado in place of butter, mayonnaise and cheese.
  1. Pumpkin seeds.  Most seeds and nuts are filled with healthy fats, fibers, protein and minerals keeping you feeling full and satisfied.   Eat them as snacks or add to your favorite cereals, salads or desserts.

  2. Oatmeal.  Whole, unprocessed oats are a wonderful source of fiber with a low glycemic index that keeps you satisfied.   Add a little cinnamon and some coconut oil and you have a belly blasting breakfast.  Just remember to avoid the processed packages of oatmeal as they contain a lot of unwanted sugar and other artificial ingredients that promote weight gain.

Dark Chocolate.  Chocolate containing at least 78% cocoa have fat burning properties that can be attributed to caffeine and theobromine.  Some studies have even shown it to increase insulin sensitivity.  Cocoa also contains monounsaturated fats and fiber both of which have been shown to aid in weight loss and it contains anandamide and PEA which improves mood and energy.  An even better way to get all the weight loss benefits of cocoa is by using raw cocoa powder.  It is more natural and contains many more nutrients than traditional cocoa powder.  Just add a scope to your smoothie or use it in desserts.
