How to Treat Vitamin B-12 Deficiency

Vitamin B-12 plays a large role in maintaining your health, even if you take it as a supplement, your body may not be absorbing it if you are Intrinsic Factor deficient. Intrinsic factor (IF) also known as gastric intrinsic factor (GIF) is a glycoprotein produced by the parietal cells of the stomach. It is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 later on in the small intestine. Without the proper amounts of intrinsic factor, B-12 present in food and orally administered is not well absorbed or utilized by the body.

Intrinsic Factor Levels Decline with Age

Intrinsic factor production declines with age. The stomach becomes less efficient in both producing IF and hydrochloric acid which impairs absorption of many nutrients in foods consumed. People with vitamin B-12 deficiency can suffer from pernicious anemia because they are not able to absorb vitamin B-12 efficiently due to a lack of intrinsic factor.

How Gastric Resection can cause Vitamin B-12 Deficiency

If you have had a gastric resection procedure to help lose weight, you do not produce enough intrinsic factor and have a reduction of the absorption of B-12.  Many of the symptoms individuals experience after such an operation are due to B-12 Deficiency.

Symptoms of Vitamin B-12 Deficiency
