Fueling the Fire – Tips to Nourish your Workout

Posted by Stephanie Turley

No matter how long or how hard you are working out, the importance of eating properly is critical to the synergy of your dietary and fitness practice. Think of your body like a diesel motor. If you expect the motor to run efficiently, to perform as you expect it to, and to last for any length of time, you have to fill the tank with diesel fuel. If you attempt to put in unleaded gas, no matter what grade, how clean, or the cost, you will eventually blow the motor and it will become unusable. Whether you are a casual walker or a competitive athlete in training, the foods you consume will have a direct impact on your body, your emotions, and eventually, your lifestyle. Here's some tips to keep in mind when you are fueling your own “diesel motor”. Read more...

Finding Time to Exercise

Posted by Lisa Ritchie (Inactive)

It’s that time of the year when there never seems to be enough hours in the day. Last weekend I started my Christmas shopping, plus there’s Thanksgiving to prepare for! Somehow I still managed to fit in my workouts. How ironic that the more labor saving devices we build the less time we seem to have. Should you join a gym?

Posted by Lisa Ritchie (Inactive)

I’m on the fence about joining a new gym. The one I belong to is becoming increasingly unaffordable and, to be honest, I don’t use most of the offerings. I’m a cardio machine and free weights kind of gal. I could care less about swimming or Zumba. Read more...

Coping with Crisis

Posted by Lisa Ritchie (Inactive)

The Northeast was hit by Hurricane Irene this past weekend, and while many of us are very used to our creature comforts, it was interesting to see how folks responded to a lack of electricity, flooding and downed trees and wires. Some complained. Others pitched in to help their neighbors. One local fitness club; New York Sports Clubs (Town Sports International) offered an open-door policy to anyone, not just their paid membership, to use the club to shower, recharge cell phones and simply de-stress with a good workout. Read more...

Gender differences in the weight room

Posted by Lisa Ritchie (Inactive)

There still seem to be a lot of discrepancies in the weight room; even in this day and age! Why are women so afraid of weights? Why do men try to lift more than they’re capable of, even when it compromises their form, loudly grunting and groaning the whole time? These types of observations really irritate me. Read more...
