A closer look at obesity

Obesity means you have an excessive amount of body fat. It has been more precisely defined by the National Institute of Health as a body max index of thirty and above.  Body mass index (BMI) is the statistical measure of what a person should weigh in relation to their height.  That translates to about thirty pounds over one’s ideal weight.  Ideal body weight (IBW) is the weight that people are expected to weigh based on age, sex, and height.  You don’t have to be obese to be unhealthy.  Being just five pounds above you IBW can make you feel terrible.  Ideal body weight can be calculated in many ways.  One of the simplest calculations is using the “Devine Formula” below:

Males: IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet.
Females: IBW (kg) = 45.5  + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet.

If you are obese (greater than 30 lbs. overweight), you need to do an additional calculation using the adjusted body weight formula (ABW):
ABW (kg) = IBW + 0.4(actual weight - IBW)

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, sixty four percent of American adults are considered overweight or obese. Overweight and obese people stand a greater likelihood of developing life-altering and/or life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis, liver problems and many other unhealthy and serious conditions.  The more overweight an individual is, the higher the risk of developing such diseases.  Not only is the degree of excess weight a serious issue, but also where one carries their fat.  For instance, it is generally accepted that those who carry more stomach fat are at higher risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.  This fat is very dangerous and is especially common in men, whereas women tend to carry most weight in their lower bodies.

Being overweight not only has negative health effects, but also social and emotional consequences.  People who are above their ideal weight tend to have less energy, are more inactive, more self-conscious, less confident and more likely to be depressed.  This often leads to a viscous cycle of inactivity and overeating that can be very difficult to break.

If your body is acidic, you cannot lose weight.  The body’s main way of flushing out toxins is through your colon, kidneys, skin and lymph system.  However, the more bombarded these organs becomes with toxins, the less effective they become at flushing.  The result is that excess acidic wastes get stored in fat cells where they cause less harm to the body.  Despite your best efforts, you are unable to lose weight because your body is holding on to these excess fat cells; after all, it needs them for storing acidic wastes.    It’s time for you to take control of your life.  You need to buffer those acids with high pH foods.   It’s time to get ALKALINE!
