Lentils are one of the highest alkaline protein sources and since our bodies use more energy to digest protein, we tend to burn more fat when we consume them. Lentils are also an excellent source of fiber which not only helps to lower cholesterol but also keeps your metabolism revved and appetite satisfied for long periods of time. All of this and they are high in iron and B vitamins making them an excellent choice for vegetarians. They make a delicious tasting soup or an easy side dish. Read more...

Ideas about nutrition are finally starting to change thanks to an abundance of scientific evidence that stresses that a plant-based diet can prevent many common illnesses and diseases and can thereby greatly improve one’s quality of life. Many athletes, celebrities and politicians are transitioning away from animal products simply because they are convinced by the benefits of vegetarianism. Some of which include lower risk of metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and diabetes. Read more...

Color Your Plate
Brighten your diet with color, a simple approach to eating right by adding color to your meals. Choose dishes marked with colors which combine fruits and vegetables - even better when combined with a smart blend of high fiber carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. This approach will keep you alkaline, increase energy, maintain a balanced diet, satisfy hunger and reduce cravings.
Yellow foods like yellow peppers, corn and pineapple all optimize brain function.
Red foods like tomatoes, red peppers, strawberries, cherries, cranberries and watermelon support heart and circulatory system.
Green foods, the heart of the alkaline diet, like broccoli, kiwi, avocados, spinach, kale and all other dark leafy greens promote muscle and bone health.
Blue foods like blueberries, plums, eggplant, and figs promote micro-circulation.
Orange foods like papaya, sweet potatoes and peaches support skin and mucus tissues.
White foods like onion, cauliflower, garlic and parsnips enhance cellular recovery as well as support immune and lymphatic systems.
A good way to incorporate many of of these foods in one meal is with a green smoothie. Often we get too comfortable and use the same fruits, vegetables and protein sources every day. Try switching up what you add every few days to maximize what each colored food has to offer. This will also help ensure you meet the RDA for many of the required vitamins and minerals.
Here are some of my favorite green smoothies.
1 cup of almond milk
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 cup raspberries or strawberries
1/4 ripe avocado
1/4 green pepper
A few baby carrots
Tsp of flax seeds
Handful of spinach
A few leaves of basil
A 1/4 cup of cauliflower
1 scoop of vegetarian protein powder
* note: Try to use organic whenever possible.
Blend well and drink!

We have all been in situations where we want a quick pre or post workout snack. Many of us resort to protein bars and there are some good organic choices out there but they can be expensive. It is important to always have snacks on hand to help curve carvings and hunger between meals. A good healthy, inexpensive alternative solution is to make your own protein power cookies. The protein, healthy fats and fiber in these delicious cookies will slow down digestion, prevent swings in blood sugar levels and leave you feeling full and satisfied. All of this, and they are good for you! Take a look at two of my favorite recipes. Read more...
